In 1921 at the age of 16, Robert Toogood started work at Ely Paper Mill at tuppence-farthing an hour. Six in the morning until six at night every day except Sunday. It was known locally as ‘The White Man’s Grave’ because of the hard work, long hours and tough regime. It was generally believed that the owner, Thomas Owen, thought more of his horses than he did his workers. Bob retired in 1970 at the age of 65.3rd September 1939 The outbreak of the Second World War. At Ely Paper Mill, Bob Toogood found himself in a reserved occupation when the plant was given over to making cordite paper & designated a munitions factory. Bob became an air raid warden in Canton.
On 21st October 1998 Bob Toogood died in his sleep at Woodlands. He was 92 years old & had seemed to be practically indestructable despite losing the use of one side of his body following his stroke. Twice since then the family had gathered around his bedside having been told to prepare for the worst. But he fooled everyone both times, & survived the loss of his wife Betty in 1995. He typified the Toogood mould- quiet, strong & uncomplaining.
