Winifred Snook [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born on 10 May 1899 in Margam, Glamorganshire, Wales, UK. She died on 1 Jun 1972. She married George Earl Cook in 1919.
In 1919 Winnie Snook, having found herself pregnant, followed George Cook, an illiterate American sailor, to America at the age of 19. She sailed on the SS New York to a new life & never returned. She married George, lost the baby & never did have any children. They prospered well. Her sister, Alice, had married Frank Gallie in Swansea in 1922 & they later followed Winnie to America, arriving in New York at Christmas 1929, just in time for the depression, & became naturalised citizens. Her brother Aubrey & his wife Gladys also made the journey but could not settle & returned to the UK. Alice had three children & later returned for visits to the UK on several occasions. Winnie died in Florida on 1st June 1972 & Alice in New York on 10th January 1992

On 28th December 1987 Gladys Snook, Betty Toogood’s sister-in-law, died. Ten years before, she had been awarded the MBE for services to the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service.
