Mum was in service to many people, one of them a farmer. While on the farm she had to scrub out all the milk cans & measures. While working in one of the big houses she learned to iron well. Creases had to be meticulously straight & in the right position. Pillow cases were ironed inside out so that bits of fluff did not gather in the corners and that they were easy to replace on the pillows (by holding 2 corners of the pillowcase firmly against the corners of the pillow) which she taught us, and which I still do.

In 1930 one of John's younger brothers, my Grandfather Robert Hillman Spencer Toogood & my Grandmother Beatrice Fanny (Snook) had their first son. In John's honour they named him John Earl Toogood. John Junior always held his namesake in very high regard & sadly died 89 years to the day his famous heroic uncle gave his life for his country on Rememberance Sunday 2005. Now we can remember both the John's on that same day in November & continue to hold them in the high regard they both deserve.

At some point in his short career with the Royal Naval Division, John Toogood found the time to compose a poem on the bravery of Cardiff lads. It was later published in the South Wales Echo. D.188. The full poem is transcribed below.

WELL DONE, CARDIFF LADS !

Composed by John Spencer Toogood
Royal Naval Division
27, Daisy Street, Cardiff.

And published in the South Wales Echo
During the First World War

Well Done, Cardiff Lads !

Go forth, ye youthful Cardiff Lad
Our trust we place in you;
We know you’ll win this bloody fight
With honours staunch and true.

We’ll help you win this righteous war
With all that you require’
Though distance separates afar
Our love burns like a fire.

We’ll read reports in Cardiff Press
Of brave deeds done by you,
We know it is the very best
From Cardiff Lads so true.

Our safety and surety placed
In lads so brave as you
Can ne’er be shattered or displaced
In hearts so loyal and true.

We tell in distant lands afar
What Cardiff Lads have done
To end this cruel and bloody war
And beat the monster Hun.

And underneath the Southern Cross
We Cardiffians feel sad-
We read another one is lost,
And he a Cardiff Lad.

In vision, we can see the home,
His chair beside the fire-
A weeping mother all alone
With blighted hope’s desire.

Then couple with our Cardiff Lad
A mother true and brave,
Who gave the very best she had-
A son now in his grave.

A battle on the land and sea
We’ll fight with all our might,
And win the day of Liberty.
Well done, ye Cardiff Lads.

He lived for a while with an Uncle in Newport, as did his older brother, but then went into the orphanage. His parents had died within a few months of each other. Two other sisters lived with relatives - the younger one, Caroline Kesiah, lived with her grandparents in Churchill, Somerset.

When John was old enough to leave the orphanage,in Sep 1858, he was apprenticed to a Tailor, Thomas Lidbury, in St Philip's, Bristol. Here he learned his trade. Later he met and married Selina Maria Hillman whose father was also a tailor, and who came from Banwell in Somerset. they were married in Bristol but came to Newport where their children were born.

Selena Maria Hillman was the only one of the surviving children in her family to stay in this country - although I didn't realise this until I received a letter from Australia - where one of my distant relatives had found her name on the Ancestral File of the Church. When I registered my name with them some years ago I had not found her christening & had her father's name from her marriage certificate. I had family records which showed her death in 1927 as aged 90 years, but had been unable to find her birth registered in the Civil Records Index. I had found a marriage record of a Robert Hillman & Flora Hares but had not been able to verify these as Selena's parents.

From Australia they asked if this could be the person they were trying to find. I wrote back giving them the details of her parents & siblings which I had since found, & to my astonishment they sent back 2 Pedigree Charts - one for
the paternal line- Hillman, & another for the maternal line - Bishop, dating back to the 1600's. Although this was only the direct line - from the information I received I was able to find the children of each generation from records in Somerset. Shelley & Robert Hillman in Australia were thrilled to have this information & in return they sent me the children & grandchildren of Selena's brothers & sisters who had gone to Australia. One of Selena's brothers, Henry & his wife Betsy Munro (who was born in Scotland) had 18 children.
