On the14th October 1913 Britain’s worst mining disaster occurred at the little town of Senghenydd to the north of Caerphilly. 439 men died, but two who survived were Billy Butt (married to Mary-Jane Pitt) who would lose his right arm in a later mining accident & Albert George Toogood who crawled on his hands & knees for more than four miles to emerge safely at another pit-head. Albert also survived through the First World War although he did receive a serious head injury after being kicked by a mule. He died peacefully at home in his seventies.

George Ewart Head [Parents] 1 was born on 26 Feb 1902 in Eastbourne, England, UK. He died on 21 Sep 1984. He married Phyllis Muriel Gwendoline Evans on 10 Apr 1932. George was employed as Butcher.

On 26th February 1902 George Ewart Head was born in Eastbourne. He was the fourth child of Harry & Alice Head & joined Reg (1894) & Sid (1898) His sister Irene had died as a five year old in 1901. Another brother, Horace, would follow in 1908 & two sisters, Ena & Marjory in 1906 and 1911 respectively. Both the girls were destined to remain unmarried. George followed his father & grandfather into the meat trade.On 21st march 1925 Having rejoined his family in Cardiff, George Head, now 23, was working for Elliot’s Wire Rope Company & was offered a long term job supervising the winding gear of a gold mine in Brazil. As he left the Liverpool quayside to board the SS Demarara, he shook hands with his ailing brother Reg in an emotional goodbye, both men knowing they would not see each other again.
On the 3rd September 1939 due to the outbreak of the Second World War, wholesale meat marketing was taken over by the Ministry of Food & George Head found himself in a reserved occupation. He joined the Home Guard in the Rumney Battalion.
In Dec 1960 Following a prolonged period of torrential rain, heavy flooding beset the village of Nantgarw & the Cross Keys was submerged almost to first floor level. It resulted in a complete refurbishment of the pub & the nicotine stained singing room disappeared forever.
On 21st September 1984 Two months after the death of his younger brother, George Ewart Head died unexpectedly in his sleep. With poor circulation in his legs, he had been more or less confined to a wheelchair for the best part of two years. With an abject fear of hospitals, nursing homes & similar places, he would not have been unhappy at going this way.
Phyllis Muriel Gwendoline Evans [Parents] 1 was born on 22 Apr 1907. She died on 20 Feb 1999. She married George Ewart Head on 10 Apr 1932.

On 22nd April 1907 Phyllis Muriel Gwendoline Evans was born, & by now the Evans family were living at the Rovers Hotel in Wellington Street in Canton. Phyllis very nearly didn’t make it through her birth and hovered on the brink for some hours. But she survived to grow up, though troubled by a significant hearing defect all her life. She married George Ewart Head along the way, brought three burly sons into the world & lived into her nineties.On 20th February 1999 Phyllis Muriel Gwendoline Head died at the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford. She had been losing weight steadily since Carol’s death & her kidneys finally stopped functioning & she developed pneumonia. But even in a state of virtual unconsciousness her spirit did not desert her. She fought gamely on for days longer than expected- as the staff nurse said- “She’s a tough old girl and has surprised us all.”

Sidney William Evans [Parents] 1 was born on 23 Apr 1876. He died on 23 Apr 1964. He married Clara Francis Griggs on 6 Dec 1899. Sidney was employed as Publican.

Clara Francis Griggs [Parents] 1 was born on 6 Apr 1879. She died on 2 Sep 1948 in Cardiff Royal Infirmary, Glamorganshire, Wales, UK. She married Sidney William Evans on 6 Dec 1899.

On 2nd September 1948 Clara Evans died in Cardiff Royal Infirmary at the age of 69, following a short illness. She had been the first of her mother’s 23 children when she was born in 1879.

On 10th January 1902 Ivy Claire Annie Edith Evans was born to Cardiff publicans Sid & Clara Evans. She grew up to marry Cliff Wood, a merchant seaman who would later join the ‘family trade’ & become a publican.In 1926 Ivy, the Evans family’s eldest child, was the first to marry & leave home. As licencees, she & Cliff Wood kept the Four Elms in Newport Road, The Royal Hotel in Bewdley & the Gate Hangs Well in Stourbridge. Ivy had one son, Ivan, who joined the Royal Navy only to die of a brain haemorrhage at the age of 23, whilst serving aboard a submarine. She was already a widow herself by then, and Ivy later married Fred Jackson. She died in Stourbridge in 1966 at the age of 64.

Harry Head [Parents] 1 was born on 21 Jan 1873. He died on 29 Jan 1952. He married Alice Young in 1892. Harry was employed as Butcher & Publican.

In 1914/15 Harry Head answered an advert & took a job in Cardiff as manager of a wholesale meat depot. He left his 14 year old son George, behind in lodgings in London as an apprenticed draper. The rest of the family moved to Cardiff establishing a first time connection with the city.In 1930 Much to everyone’s surprise, Harry Head married again - to Muriel Tamplin, a barmaid 30 years his junior, he had met at the Sealawns Hotel in Porthcawl. They took the Cefn Mably Arms, a country inn at Michaelstone-Y-Vedw between Cardiff & Newport.
On 29th January 1952 Harry Head died at the Cefn at the age of 79. A domineering man with the ability to instil awe if not downright fear in many people, he had played the role of the country squire for his last 20 years. His widow Mu, was able to continue running the pub in much the same traditional sort of way.
Alice Young [Parents] 1 was born on 1 Mar 1872. She died on 21 May 1926. She married Harry Head in 1892.

On 21st May 1926 Alice Head died unexpectedly at the age of 54 & George took the opportunity to return home from Brazil. He had regularly been sending money home for his mother to keep for him, only to find that his father had been intercepting it. And he was a gambling man who was not always successful, because now the cupboard was bare!

On 1st August 1914 War declared between Britain & Germany. Brothers Sidney & Reginald Head played their part. Only Sidney Head (London Rifles) came through unscathed.
On 21st April 1925 As expected, Reginald Percy Head died from the effects of First World War gas poisoning at 31 years, exactly a month after the parting with his brother George.
